Puzzle: Bring Me Exactly 7 Cups Of Water

January 20th, 2006

I will give you two containers…
One holds exactly 3 cups, and the other holds exactly 5 cups.
I want you to go to the river and bring me back exactly 7 cups of water using those two containers.

The containers are not measuring containers, they have no markings. All we know is that they hold exactly 3 cups and exactly 5 cups.
You can’t estimate either. You must bring back exactly 7 cups of water.

How do you do it?

(The answer will be posted in the future)

  1. hey, my lil sis who is 10 figured it out in less than a minute. Pour the 5 cup into the 3 cup until the 3 cup is full. dump the 3 cup. fill the remaining 2 from the 5 cup to the 3 cup. Then just fill the 5 cup and voila 7 cups of water

  2. My dog Toby got it, too!

  3. How’s this one:
You are poisoned. There is a vial of antidote, but it is mixed up with eight other vials of poison, so there are nine vials altogether, with the same exact appearance. However, the vial with the antidote is just a bit heavier than the others, but not so heavy that it is distinguishable from the others by holding it in your hands. There is a balance, but you can only use it twice to weigh the vials together, and the balance will explode after the second use. How are you to survive?
